QUEEN CREEK, Ariz.–The Queen Creek High School wrestling team is returning to the state tournament on Friday just one year after winning its first team state championship trophy.
This year, they come back after moving up to Division I, and are sending six wrestlers to the tournament. The Dogs are coached by Jose Fernandez and Kyle Hare.
At 132 pounds, junior Denton Hardt is a three-time AIA state qualifier. His record this year was 29-7 and he placed third at the sectional tournament last weekend.
Sophomore Seth Fernandez is the second QC qualifier at 138 pounds. He was 27-3 this year, following a successful freshman campaign, where he was the DII state runner-up.
Older brother Denen Fernandez is the team’s only state qualifying senior. At 152 pounds, he is a two-time state champion and was a runner-up as a freshman. He had a record of 41-1 this year and won the sectional championship. Fernandez will be continuing his wrestling career at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in the Fall.
Junior Justin Prigge will be wrestling in the 170-pound weight class after taking third at sectionals with a season record of 39-10.
Dylan Abelseth is a 220 pound junior who also took third at sectionals and qualified for state.
Finally, freshman Logan Browne will wrestle at 285 pounds. He took 4th place at sectionals.
The state championship will take place on Friday and Saturday for Division I. The medal round will take place starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Follow our social media pages throughout the weekend for updates and final results.
